Pinterest. We all know about it, and we all know what kind of cool ideas we can get out of it. In recent years, Pinterest has become the website to visit if you love finding and gathering ideas for all kinds of interests: cooking, DIY, arts and crafts, writing – you name it, you can find it.

If you’re entirely new to the concept of Pinterest and aren’t really sure if it’s worth using for your business’s marketing campaign, fret no more. We’ll go over the basics and how you can take advantage of it.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a visually engaging social media website where its users can “pin” their favourite posts published on there, usually in the form of pictures and articles, so that they can refer to it time and again without having to rediscover it. It’s essentially an effective means of finding valuable, engaging content, putting that content to good use, and sharing it with family and friends.

In other words, if you have a photo gallery and can derive people’s interests about your company through these images, you’re pretty much good to go!

How Can I Use it for Marketing?

Lots of ways! For starters, this is the best kind of social media platform where businesses with a lot of visual content and blog content could benefit from. Why? Because it’s estimated that over 150 million users regularly use Pinterest, and the majority of them claimed in a survey held by Pinterest that they’d rather find valuable content from a brand or store than a celebrity. These kinds of facts cannot be ignored.

How Do I Use Pinterest?

It’s easy! Signing up for Pinterest is free, and there’s no limit to how many pins or visuals you upload to your account. You can set up a business account (not a personal one – big difference) and start creating your own boards to pin content on. Note that business accounts contain a different Terms of Service compared to personal accounts, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with that first.

Once you’ve got an account set up, you can add the Pinterest plugin to your website (this can be done mobile websites too!) via their widget builder. There are better details on using the widget builder in this article here or this article here.

Finally, you can start “pinning” your favourite pictures and articles and share content you like with other members – ideally you want to pin content uploaded in a similar vein to what you usually promote. You can also insert keywords, hashtags, and other little details into each pin to help users find your content.

Additional Notes to Consider

Before you think to yourself, “Wow, Pinterest sounds great, I’m going to post EVERYTHING from my website on to there!”, stop and really take a better look at your current content. If it’s too text-heavy or you don’t see any content worth sharing on Pinterest, don’t force yourself to use the platform. It’s important to emphasize that its users are not stupid – they can tell when a company on Pinterest isn’t even remotely passionate or genuine about what they are sharing and using online. The same thing goes for any social media platform, really.
